Joe Clarke continued his outstanding form in the County Championship, scoring his second century of the season to become the competition’s leading run-scorer, but Surrey seamer Dan Worrall produced a five-wicket haul to keep the contest finely balanced on day one at Trent Bridge.
Clarke’s unbeaten 129 took his season tally to 675 runs, as Nottinghamshire reached 317-7 at stumps after Jack Haynes contributed a solid 82. The pair added 146 for the fourth wicket, putting the home side in a commanding position at 251-3 before Surrey fought back strongly.
Worrall, making his first appearance of the season after recovering from injury, led the Surrey charge with figures of 5-61. The 34-year-old removed both Nottinghamshire openers early after captain Rory Burns won the toss and elected to bowl.
Ben Duckett made a fluent 42 before being dismissed just before lunch, leaving Nottinghamshire at 105-3 and giving Surrey the edge in the opening session. Duckett had looked in fine touch, striking six boundaries, but fell to a short, swinging delivery from Worrall that he could only glove behind.
The afternoon session belonged to the batsmen, with Clarke and Haynes dominating proceedings. No wicket fell during that period as the pair rebuilt the innings impressively. Haynes, who had struggled since his hundred against Glamorgan earlier in the season, reached his fifty from 86 balls, while Clarke brought up his century from 169 deliveries.
However, the balance shifted dramatically when Worrall and Sean Abbott struck four wickets in the space of as many overs. Haynes fell to a superb return catch from Worrall for 82, before the same bowler dismissed Kyle Verreynne at second slip to claim his first five-wicket haul since May 2024.
Abbott then produced two excellent deliveries, removing Lyndon James caught behind and bowling Liam Patterson-White. Clarke was left to anchor the innings and did so admirably, receiving support from Australia’s off-spinner Matthew Kuhnemann as Nottinghamshire closed on 317-7.
Nottinghamshire, top of Division One after winning the title last season, have made a strong start to their title defence but Surrey are pushing hard. The second day promises more drama as the hosts look to build a substantial first-innings total.
