The NFL is once again exploring the possibility of expanding the regular season, this time from 17 games to 18. After successfully negotiating a shift from 16 to 17 games in the 2021 season, team owners are now pushing for an additional game week, according to a recent report from The Athletic.

Sources close to the league suggest that a “season with 18 games is on the horizon,” though the path forward remains challenging. The owners are reportedly stepping up pressure on the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) to open negotiations earlier than expected. The current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which runs through the 2030 season, only allows for 17 games, but owners are eager to amend the schedule before that deadline.

An 18-game regular season would require the NFLPA’s approval, and talks are expected to begin soon among the league, team owners, and player representatives. In addition to the extra game, the NFL also wants to expand the number of international games to 16, meaning each team would play one game abroad per season.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones defended the proposed expansion during the NFL League Meetings in Phoenix, Arizona. “I think they would make better use of their talents and careers,” Jones said when asked about the benefits of an 18th game for players. “Fewer preseason games and more opportunities in games that offer the right balance of financial compensation and public attention.”

While the league is optimistic about reaching a deal, significant hurdles remain, including player safety concerns and compensation adjustments. The NFL previously attempted to implement an 18-game schedule about 15 years ago but failed amid a lockout. This time, the league appears more determined to push through before 2031.
