In a segment on Cadena COPE, former Real Madrid goalkeeper Santiago Canizares delivered a scathing critique of Florentino Perez’s recent press conference. Canizares admitted he had hoped to hear concrete solutions regarding the club’s sporting project for next season. Instead, he witnessed a chaotic and deeply disappointing performance.
“I am disappointed because I wanted to hear about the sporting solutions for next season,” Canizares stated. “But what I saw today was a person… I don’t know Florentino personally, but today he was unrecognizable to me. The leader Ruben was talking about, the successful businessman who manages 150,000 employees, today managed to unite everyone in agreement.”
He continued: “Not just within our media outlet. We all have our own opinions here, and there are many of us. It’s usually difficult to reach a consensus on any one issue. But today, he made everyone who expressed a view and prepared to analyze that press conference come to the same conclusion: this was not merely a bad press conference, but a chaotic one, thoroughly and utterly bad.”
Turning his focus to the future, Canizares expressed his primary concern: “Looking ahead, what worries me most is the future. By his own account, the future of Real Madrid still seems to be with this Florentino, the current Florentino. He is now 79 years old. I say this without any disrespect, as I respect my elders and I respect him both personally and professionally. He has been a fantastic entrepreneur. But if this is the direction his thinking is taking, then Real Madrid truly has a reason to worry about its own future.”
